I've played and written music all my life, starting out on piano and violin from the age of 6. I always found creating my own music more interesting than repeating what others had written down and soon found myself song writing and playing in bands while studying for the usual classical exams as a teenager.
This led to a great interest in music technology which was just becoming much more accessible at that time. I worked several Saturday jobs while at college to save for my first Atari ST, keyboards and samplers. I was the Music A-level student reading a copy of Sound on Sound hidden under the table.
I gained a BA (Hons) in Commercial Music at part of the first cohort of the now well established course at the University of Westminster. From there I worked for several years at Metropolis in West London, writing and programming music for artists, TV and film.
In 1998 I was diagnosed with a rare neuromuscular condition which I had unknowingly had since birth. This meant being on a ventilator to breathe at night and gradually losing the ability to walk. Luckily I retain the use of my hands and so can still create music and work from my home studio. These days I am 24/7 on the ventilator and my music is in equal parts a therapy, a vocation and a job. I don't think much about being disabled other than it being a massive inconvenience.
I am fortunate to have worked with some amazing musicians, writers and producers over the years and that I am still making music to a high standard and of commercial value. There is still nothing quite like hearing my own compositions on TV or online and having the respect and compliments of my peers. Today the game has changed out of all recognition from when I started but by keeping writing in as many areas as I can I've adapted to the new reality. I've found the key is always being prepared to learn something new and apply it to what I already know. To be ready to do something I hadn't attempted previously and get better at it as I go.
I aim to continue making music as long as possible and never feel I have achieved enough to satisfy the urge to push on and do something bigger and better. Maybe it'll be this year...
